Make Every Hour Count

Measure of Competency - Make Every Hour Count

I'm going to spend a little bit of time today talking about the Architectural Experience Program, because it's really important in your life.

The experience that you get as a new architecture professional needs to count. Every hour that you apply to your experience program needs to count for advancing you toward your goal of getting licensed.

3170 hours are required in six areas, not equally. In fact, the biggest area is one that you do a lot anyway, and that's documentation for the most part, project documentation.

I've been a supervisor of five architectural candidates. It's not very many, but I've logged 323 reports of time, still not a lot. There's a lot of supervisors out there, who have done 1000s and helped hundreds of architectural candidates. But I want to share some data about these five candidates. I'll use fictitious names just to protect their privacy, but these are real people.

Robert logged 5898 hours, and it's complete. The AXP is complete. David, he completed 5150 hours, and he's complete, and he passed his exam, and he's a licensed architect.

Guadalupe has 5113 hours, is just a little short, about 20 hours short of completing the AXP. He just needs to file the report. I think he's already got that time done.

Hank has 13,521 hours. Do you realize how much time that is for every year that you're working full time, 40 hours a week. If you get a couple hours a couple weeks off, you're putting in about 2000 hours every year, 13,500 that's almost seven years.

Maddie has 2355 hours. She hasn't finished the AXP, but she has completed all of the project development and documentation hours, she has 2108 hours in that area. So out of 2355 hours, has 2108 hours in one area. Most of the other areas haven't even begun to be started.

My point is, it just takes too much time to complete the AXP. You only need 3170 hours, but you can't do that if the tasks you're doing aren't focused on what you really need to achieve. Be more focused, more intentional.

Supervisors and mentors: guide every task for new professionals toward making every hour count.
